Residential Conductive Education Holiday Courses for Individuals with Parkinson's in the South of France

Few places remaining

12th -19th May and 16th-23th June 2012

Dear Friend,

It has been my long held dream to be able to offer Conductive Education in a residential retreat setting. To create possibilities for individuals and groups to access Conductive Education programmes within beautiful surroundings that lift people out of their ordinary lives, nourish their senses and nurture their souls while providing the essential consistency which is the heart of the Conductive Education System.

I have been searching for places which are unique and would provide you with a holiday of a lifetime, while strengthening your commitment to your health and wellbeing by utilizing the philosophy and practise of the Pető System.

The villa in which the course will take place sits in its own large grounds with pretty manicured lawns, flowering plants, trees and a 10m x 5m heated swimming pool and heated outside pool terrace.

There is an electronic gate on entrance, space for cars and large pathway to the front entrance.

The villa was re-designed by Robert Dallas four years ago. Robert Dallas designs concentrate on maintaining a traditional Provence feel, whilst ensuring every aspect of modern living is catered for.

This villa is quite simply perfect. Beautifully designed, every possible comfort is provided for--underfloor heating in the outdoor patios, sliding doors that make the most of the glorious Mediterranean weather, outdoor pizza oven and barbeque, and a glorious pool with a poolside shower. For entertainment there is a 42-inch television with Sky Freeview, a home cinema system with sound bar.

A 10-15 minute walk will bring you to St-Paul-de-Vence village with its famous restaurants and art galleries.

The Conductive Education Programme will take place in the mornings and will prepare you to fully enjoy the rest of the day. You will be able to experience the difference in your wellbeing when you start your day as Professor Pető intended when designed the programmes specifically for individuals with Parkinson’s.

Testimonials from individuals attending Conductive Education classes from the Romsey Branch of Parkinson’s UK

‘I was diagnosed in 2005 on my 50th birthday to be precise, an age that one might normally think to be planning ahead to retirement. Not a chance! Life was going to take an abrupt turn. My walking – something I had always enjoyed – had become very bad and unsteady. Our local Parkinson’s specialist nurse Tracy McElwaine recommended that I try Conductive Education to try and improve things. To that day I have not looked back!

The exercise classes both physical and mental have given me a whole new outlook on life. They have improved confidence, fitness and above all a sense of well-being. Fitness has improved to the extent that have taken part in the Great South Run in 2006, A 55km trek in Sierra Nevada in Spain in 2010 and more recently in November 2011 a 300 km cycle ride across Cuba.

Many people do not believe that I have Parkinson’s because the physical symptoms are just not there anymore and allowing me to be accepted in the big wide world as “Normal”. William Reavell

‘I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s when I was 51 years old but it took me 6 months to get the doctor to refer me to consultant. My Parkinson’s Specialist Nurse Tracy was brilliant and lifted me up and got me playing golf again. I carried on working full time as an office manager for Hants CC until the end of June 2011 when I was made redundant. Before Parkinson’s, I was an active sportswoman then suddenly my legs had no strength and my life turned upside down.

With the help of my partner and friends I still smile and love life and now work part time voluntary in Romsey Naomi House shop, play golf at Wellow, have done over 50 Ti Chi classes, and support my beloved Southampton FC.

My new passion is Conductive Education which has been amazing for me. After only a few sessions I felt stronger and more flexible. I was introduced to this by the Romsey Parkinson’s Branch and it really helped me so much that I won the Best Lady and The Best Parkinson’s Golfer at a Parkinson’s Charity Golf Day at Alresford. The group is really friendly and Judit is amazing with her skills and energy for group. Also since then like Bill I feel I’m getting me back to my old self! I just wish I had access to it 5 years ago!’ Anne Phillips

Look what I found about Dr. Pető András...

Pető András orvos, a konduktív mozgásterápiai képzés megalapozója

Dr. Pető András 1893. szeptember 11-én született Szombathelyen, ahol iskoláit is végezte. Életszemléletének kialakulását jelentősen befolyásolhatta pedagógus anyjának szigorú nevelése, és tehetetlenül, Parkinson-kórban szenvedő apjának sorsa. Iskolás korában feltűnően sokat olvasott, újságot szerkesztett, és házitanítóként is dolgozott. Családfenntartóként két öccse oktatásáról, neveléséről is gondoskodnia kellett.

A módszer ezért kapta a konduktív nevet, a latin szó jelentése: rávezető.

Életútját Forrai Judit orvostörténész írta meg az angol nyelvű, Memoirs of the beginnings of conductive pedagogy and András Pető című könyvében.

A Kútvölgyi úti kórház melletti épület ma a világ számos országában működő konduktív nevelési hálózat központja.

It would be so enlightening if…

... when I am asked to work as a consultant in 'mainstream' schools or colleges if the headteachers and special needs co-ordinators didn't start the initial meetings with phrases like these ' We are here to celebrate or we are here to embrace diversity'.
These are the most discriminating phrases in my book unless, they are used during every meeting for every pupil

Oh dear...

From Memoirs of the beginnings of Conductive Pedagogy and András Pető , compiled by Dr. Judit Forrai

“Pető filled the gap in the field of treating disabled people. Patients arrived from all over the country, inpatients and outpatients, children and adults.

Bela Biszku recalls the time: One of my former classmates, Karoly Szamosi, who worked for Nepszabadsag as a deputy editor suggested that I should go and see Pető.

He told me how he got contact with Pető. After the war, in 1945, Szamosi quite suddenly became paralysed, literally from one day to the next, and although he was taken to lots of doctors and from one institute to another his condition didn’t improve.

He was walking with aid of two crutches and had a kind of machine on his legs when he was told to go and see Pető, because he might be able to do something. So he was taken to see Pető in Alkotas utca.

As soon as Pető saw Szamosi he shouted:

‘Take away those sticks and take off that machine you murderers!’

Szamosi had such a fright that he dropped the sticks and although his muscles and hips were already weakened, the machine was taken off his legs. This was his first meeting with Pető and after that Pető started to work with him. Pető stated that the cause of the paralysis was the side-effects of medication…”
