Testimonials from individuals attending Conductive Education classes from the Romsey Branch of Parkinson’s UK

‘I was diagnosed in 2005 on my 50th birthday to be precise, an age that one might normally think to be planning ahead to retirement. Not a chance! Life was going to take an abrupt turn. My walking – something I had always enjoyed – had become very bad and unsteady. Our local Parkinson’s specialist nurse Tracy McElwaine recommended that I try Conductive Education to try and improve things. To that day I have not looked back!

The exercise classes both physical and mental have given me a whole new outlook on life. They have improved confidence, fitness and above all a sense of well-being. Fitness has improved to the extent that have taken part in the Great South Run in 2006, A 55km trek in Sierra Nevada in Spain in 2010 and more recently in November 2011 a 300 km cycle ride across Cuba.

Many people do not believe that I have Parkinson’s because the physical symptoms are just not there anymore and allowing me to be accepted in the big wide world as “Normal”. William Reavell

‘I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s when I was 51 years old but it took me 6 months to get the doctor to refer me to consultant. My Parkinson’s Specialist Nurse Tracy was brilliant and lifted me up and got me playing golf again. I carried on working full time as an office manager for Hants CC until the end of June 2011 when I was made redundant. Before Parkinson’s, I was an active sportswoman then suddenly my legs had no strength and my life turned upside down.

With the help of my partner and friends I still smile and love life and now work part time voluntary in Romsey Naomi House shop, play golf at Wellow, have done over 50 Ti Chi classes, and support my beloved Southampton FC.

My new passion is Conductive Education which has been amazing for me. After only a few sessions I felt stronger and more flexible. I was introduced to this by the Romsey Parkinson’s Branch and it really helped me so much that I won the Best Lady and The Best Parkinson’s Golfer at a Parkinson’s Charity Golf Day at Alresford. The group is really friendly and Judit is amazing with her skills and energy for group. Also since then like Bill I feel I’m getting me back to my old self! I just wish I had access to it 5 years ago!’ Anne Phillips
