…”He did not acknowledge the word ‘incurable’.

It was impossible to utter it in his presence. When he was sitting with his disabled children, who learnt  slowly to eat and drink, walk and write in one of the rooms at the institute – he sang with them, he carried out their tasks with them- he was not to be disturbed. He would not answer the telephone for anyone.

… He would not have written this down. He did not like words. He liked deeds. He liked the work. The children. The tidiness. The essence.  The completeness. But no improvisations! No gimmicks!”

Long term pupil of Conductive Education strives in martial art too!

Patrick's double gold even shocks his coach.
Patrick started his journey with the Pető Method when he was a toddler.
He made his first independent steps on his 7th birthday.
A few years ago his parents were told that he would need to have a major surgery, but they chose the less invasive option and more regular conductive education sessions.
At their recent visit to the consultant they were told that Patrick doesn't need to have an operation anymore and the structural misalignment is reduced to 0.02%!
Patrick also self-taught himself to play on the guitar and writes his own music.
Well done Patrick we are so very proud of you!

András Pető

Compiled and edited by Gillian Maguire and Andrew Sutton

“Nothing can tear us apart
We had met at the beginning of time
We have met in every possible shape and form
We always recognised each other at first sight” András Pető

“András Pető had an indomitable will to heal and this end would be achieved by no matter how hard everyone involved should have to work to achieve this.
The moral force of this will was transmitted down through his institute and everyone working there- those who taught and those who learned. It permeated every aspect of life there, the ethos, the atmosphere in which children were brought up (and of course for his numerous adult patients too). The pedagogic task was to transform this will from teachers to learners and along with this to transfer the teachers’ respect for the pupils’ sure ability to find their own path to success. And with the motivation and rewards from hard- won independent success, András Pető’s will became the will of everyone there.
Such pedagogy demands total focus of every possible factor relevant to learning and development, bringing everything together to be coordinated in pupils’ own particular, personally integrated ways. This was certainly a pedagogy rather than a therapy or a treatment, but what to call it? 60 years ago, for a Central European medical man with a classical education this was a pedagogy that is 'conductive'.
And the pedagogues who implemented this were to become 'conductors'. ”

“This is an excellent regime. A system needs to be worked out so that a weekly class is available.” Quotes from Conductive Education Project MS Society North West Region

"It is government policy to provide
patient centred services that will
enable people with long-term
neurological conditions to maintain
their independence and well being
and lead as fulfilling lives as possible.

The MS Society fully endorses this
approach and a key aim for us is
to involve people affected by MS
in everything we do. One way we
achieve this is by encouraging people
affected by MS to get involved in the
planning and development of their
local services. Often the result is to
bring about real improvements and
lasting change.

This booklet is one of a series
showing how much can be achieved
when enthusiastic people come
together to work on a local project.

We hope you will enjoy finding out
about the project and watching
the DVD (inside back cover). If this
inspires you to support this project
or find out more about our work,
please do get in touch. Our contact
details are on the back cover.

Conductive Education Project

This conductive education (CE) pilot project
was a collaboration between the MS Society and
Neurosupport who run the Neurosupport Centre
in Liverpool, in response to the MS Society’s 2006
North West service needs analysis. In this, people
with MS made it clear they needed better access to
maintenance physiotherapy and structured exercise
in order to aid mobility and maintain flexibility.

At that time Maureen Kelly, Manager of
Neurosupport, had observed some sessions
of CE (a whole-person therapy generally associated
with children with cerebral palsy) and had been
made aware of the possibility of benefits for adults
with long-term neurological conditions. CE is a
movement and exercise regime that addresses
mobility, flexibility, control and confidence. Maureen
approached the MS Society and the need and
therapy were brought together in the pilot.

The project was promoted by the MS Society
and Neurosupport and people interested in
getting involved attended an information event
to hear more about the therapy and to sign up
to the project. Following an initial assessment by
Laszlo Szogeczki, the conductor (as the therapist
is known), the six participants received 12 sessions
of CE over 6 weeks.

The project was developed and facilitated by
two MS Society regional service development
volunteers and the MS Society’s North West service
development officer. It took place at Neurosupport.

Four months after the end of the sessions the
participants took part in an informal evaluation to
record their thoughts on all aspects of the project
– from its organisation to the benefits of the therapy
itself. Based on those very positive evaluations, we
are now hoping to provide more sessions of CE to
a greater number of people and hopefully gain the
support of mainstream health and social services."

The project was led by László Szögeczki conductor.

I couldn't have done this without attending Conductive Education Classes ♥

Copy of e-mail received this morning:

“This is me having just got married on 15 June 2012.

I walked up down aisle via stairs then spent rest day in dress and even did first dance.

I couldn't have done this without attending Conductive Education Classes run by Szathmáry Training & Consultancy for the Romsey Branch of Parkinson’s UK.

The improvement to my confidence and mobility is amazing.

Many thanks to the Romsey Group, Judit and Mandy.”

Conductive Education

“We now know that the System of Conductive Education is specifically a humanist social education, a complex educational system which takes serious account of emotional and cognitive functions.
Many scientist regard it as one of the most outstanding developments of 20th century rehabilitation and education work, since as regards integration, it was far in advance of its time.
Pető’s Conductive Education occupies a significant place in the system of education of the 20th century.
Pető put his opinions and theories into effect in real life with great precision and their validity was proved by the results which were achieved.
His education demonstrated the complex nature of the human organism, and following on from this the programme and system which made use of the connections and interactions reshaped rehabilitation work and in essence laid the foundations of the independent science of conductive education and conductive education collage.
For his work professor Pető received several disciplinary warnings, but also -at the end of his life- recognition. “

Conductive Education for Parkinson's with Judit

Snapshot One
Yesterday in the garden

“I admit that thoughts influence the body.” —Albert Einstein

Spring arrived slowly this year, or at least felt like it. Cold winds roared the forest even at times of a very few appearing sunny spells.

We had so much rain that friends started greeting each other with a phrase:
-‘Really it is enough now’-  while looking up at the grey skies.

Then it burst in without any warning or without asking for permission with its warm reassuring breeze, colours, smells and sounds.

It was SPRING again in all her glory…

I set up for our session outside, on the lawn in the garden just a few meters away from the conservatory where we would continue  with our fruit break and hand tasks series.
After taking a big sip of fresh water as always, finishing our breathing practice and warming up vocalisation work, we took our shoes off and stood barefoot on the warm grass.
It felt so good…
I said- Make connection with the ground you are connecting to a living breathing entity.
Spread your toes and even your weight through both of your feet. We were going through this process with eyes closed.

Than he opened his eyes and looked at me. –I know what you mean- he said.
On the golf course when we mark the grass with a golf ball the grass just grows back. It doesn’t need any special attention.

We were standing and bathing in the morning sun as I replied to him. - You see only living things could rejuvenate and grow living things like new shoots of grass.  If the planet wasn’t a living breathing entity it would never be able to do that.

Also I said: When the damage happens to the grass we do not kneel down and start crying, feel lost and depressed. We know that it will rejuvenate.

It is the same with our bodies when something gets out of balance we get a warning light to raise our awareness that a new way of ‘expansion’ is ready to manifest. But at the same time the body starts repairing and rejuvenating straight away.

The intelligence behind it makes it so. The intelligence which keeps our hearts beating or organises that the planets stay in orbit and that the sun comes up every morning on the sky.

When was the last time we had to check in your diary whether our heart was beating or make arrangement for the sun to come up on the sky?

But when we are diagnosed with something we forget to pay attention to this side of life…

Most of us focus on and turn our attention towards the opposite side which offers solutions made for victims and powerless sufferers.

Do you feel the pulse in your feet yet, mine just came alive and became recharged from the ground? - I asked.

Yes definitely now you said it, I feel it!-He said.

Let’s close our eyes again, stand straight, even our weight over both feet and express our gratitude for that exchange with a smile from the heart.

After all, the secret to life is about communication, exchange, learning and finding ways how to communicate and connect with everything. It is about interaction with ourselves, with others, with our environment... with everything.

There was a reason why Dr. András Pető called his system Conductive.
…to be continued
